Tragic Settlement: Jaahnavi Kandula’s Family Awarded Rs 262 Crore After Heartbreaking Losses

"Grieving Indian family of Jaahnavi Kandula stands in front of '262 CRORE SETTLEMENT' sign in Seattle after police crash that killed the student; mother in saree wipes tears."

In a dramatic turn of events, the family of 23-year-old Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula has been granted a staggering Jaahnavi Kandula compensation amounting to Rs 262 crore ($29 million) by Seattle City.

This settlement comes almost three years since Jaahnavi was fatally struck by a speeding police vehicle while pursuing her master’s at Northeastern University. The news, however, is saddened by the recent death of her father and adds a layer of profound sorrow to the closure which the family may have sought.

The Fatal Incident in Seattle

Jaahnavi Kandula, who is originally from Andhra Pradesh, was on her way across the street in South Lake Union on January 23, 2023, when she was struck by a police SUV driven by Officer Kevin Dave. The speeding police car, which was traveling at 74 mph in a 25 mph zone due to an overdose call, struck Jaahnavi, causing her death.

However, the case generated an outburst of international outrage after a body camera exposed that another officer, Daniel Auderer, made light of the tragedy with a chuckling comment that suggested he should simply “just write a cheque.”

Prosecutors did not file felony charges, citing insufficient evidence, but Dave was fined on charges of negligent driving and subsequently dismissed, along with Auderer.

The Settlement and Its Bittersweet Timing

Therefore, the wrongful death suit filed by Jaahnavi’s parents in 2024 eventually led to this $29 million deal, which is covered under the city’s insurance.

“It’s a chance for some closure,” said San Jose City Attorney Erika Evans, who stressed the point of the settlement: “Jaahnavi Kandula’s life mattered.”

Sadly, Jaahnavi’s father, police constable Kandula Srikanth, passed away on February 10, 2026, two days prior to the public declaration of the settlement.

Thus, the family, already coping with the loss of their daughter who had always wished to go back with a US degree, is subjected to this additional agony.

Ongoing Implications for Police Accountability

This case will point out gray areas in police conduct and emergency response protocols in the US.
Activist groups have since asked that speed limits be cut down and officers be better trained. The settlement amount was sizeable, yet it was a small price to pay for the irreversible human loss that the Kandula family has had to live with without Jaahnavi and her father.
