ICC Removes Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Over Misconduct Allegations
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has removed its Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, after member states voted to dismiss him over allegations of sexual misconduct.
The decision comes nearly two years after the allegations first surfaced and follows a vote by the court's 125 member states, which concluded that Khan had committed "serious misconduct and serious breach of duty," according to the Assembly of States Parties (ASP).
Member States Vote to Remove Khan
Karim Khan, a British barrister who has served as the ICC's chief prosecutor, was removed following a majority vote by the Assembly of States Parties, the ICC's governing and oversight body.
The Assembly said the decision reflected its responsibility to uphold the integrity and accountability of the court and ensure confidence in its leadership.
Decision Comes During Challenging Period
Khan's removal comes at a difficult time for the International Criminal Court.
The court is currently facing increased international pressure, including criticism and sanctions from the United States, which has opposed some of the ICC's investigations and has accused the institution of exceeding its authority.

Human Rights Groups Welcome Accountability
Human Rights Watch welcomed the decision, stressing that international institutions must maintain the highest professional and ethical standards.
Liz Evenson, the organization's International Justice Director, said the ICC must provide a safe workplace with effective and credible systems for addressing abuse, including allegations of sexual harassment and violence.
What Happens Next?
The ICC is expected to begin the process of appointing new leadership for the Office of the Prosecutor while ensuring ongoing investigations and prosecutions continue without disruption.
The court has not indicated when a permanent replacement for Khan will be selected.
