Heavy rain disrupts transport as authorities urge residents to stay indoors

Mumbai faced widespread disruption on Monday after intense monsoon rainfall flooded roads, delayed transport services and prompted authorities to issue emergency advisories across the metropolitan region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and the possibility of flash floods. Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as emergency teams responded to waterlogging, fallen trees and traffic disruptions across the city.

Transport network comes under pressure

Heavy overnight rainfall affected several parts of Mumbai's transport network.

Local train services experienced delays on multiple suburban routes, while road traffic slowed significantly due to flooded intersections and waterlogged underpasses. Rail services connecting Mumbai and Pune were also disrupted after a landslide affected the Bhor Ghat section, according to railway updates.

Flights also experienced delays as adverse weather conditions reduced visibility and slowed airport operations in parts of the city.

Schools, universities and public institutions affected

Educational institutions suspended normal operations as weather conditions worsened.

Mumbai University postponed examinations scheduled for Monday, citing the IMD warning and prioritizing student safety. Officials said revised examination dates would be announced separately.

Several schools and colleges also remained closed following directions from local authorities amid concerns over flooding and commuter safety.

Emergency response intensified

Civic authorities deployed thousands of personnel to respond to weather-related emergencies.

According to officials, more than 15,000 emergency workers were positioned across vulnerable locations to clear fallen trees, pump out floodwater and assist stranded residents. Authorities also encouraged businesses to allow employees to work from home where possible to reduce pressure on transport infrastructure.

Casualties reported after building collapse

The heavy rainfall also led to serious safety concerns.

According to Reuters, at least six people, including five children, died after buildings collapsed in Mumbai's eastern suburbs following relentless rainfall. Rescue teams continued search operations while authorities assessed structural damage in affected neighborhoods.

Why Mumbai is vulnerable during monsoon

Mumbai experiences some of India's heaviest seasonal rainfall every year due to the southwest monsoon.

Its dense urban development, low-lying coastal neighborhoods and aging drainage infrastructure can quickly lead to flooding during periods of intense rainfall. High tide conditions often worsen waterlogging by slowing the drainage of stormwater into the Arabian Sea.

Meteorologists said persistent rainfall combined with strong winds could continue to create hazardous conditions in vulnerable parts of the city.

Why this matters

Mumbai is India's financial capital and one of the country's busiest commercial hubs.

Disruptions to public transport, airports, schools and offices affect millions of residents and can temporarily slow business activity across banking, financial services, logistics and manufacturing sectors.

The current weather system also highlights growing concerns about urban resilience as climate scientists warn that extreme rainfall events are becoming more frequent in many coastal cities.

Expert perspective

Meteorologists have advised residents to monitor official weather updates closely, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides.

The IMD continues to forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Maharashtra as active monsoon conditions persist along India's western coast.

What happens next

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring rainfall intensity, drainage conditions and transport services throughout the week.

Emergency response teams remain on standby as the IMD assesses whether severe weather conditions will continue over the coming days. Residents have been advised to follow official advisories and avoid waterlogged areas unless travel is essential.

Conclusion

Mumbai continues to grapple with one of the season's most disruptive monsoon spells, with heavy rainfall affecting daily life, transport and public services. While emergency agencies remain on high alert, the evolving weather situation underscores the importance of preparedness and resilient urban infrastructure as the monsoon progresses.
