The match attracted significant attention as speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's international future continued ahead of the contest. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed before the game that the experienced opener has no immediate plans to retire from ODI cricket.
Rohit Sharma Under Pressure
Much of the pre-match focus centered on Rohit Sharma, who entered the series decider searching for form after modest scores in the opening two ODIs.
The veteran opener, renowned for his elegant stroke play and aggressive approach in the powerplay, struggled to find rhythm throughout the series. During the previous ODI in Cardiff, he faced nine consecutive dot balls before losing his wicket, highlighting the challenges he has faced against England's bowling attack.
Playing at Lord's, where the surface traditionally offers better batting conditions, Rohit had an opportunity to regain confidence against an experienced pace attack led by Jofra Archer.
At 39 years old, the Indian opener also continues to face questions about his long-term future, with discussions already turning towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gill and Kohli Remained India's Biggest Batting Hopes
India once again relied heavily on captain Shubman Gill and senior batter Virat Kohli to anchor the innings.
Gill showed positive intent but was unable to convert another promising start into a match-winning century.
Kohli looked in excellent touch throughout the series and appeared on course for another three-figure score before falling to Archer in the previous match. His dismissal exposed India's middle order, allowing England to seize control of the contest.
India needed stronger partnerships in the decider but could not build enough momentum during the chase.
Middle Order Faces Another Test
The visitors also monitored the fitness of KL Rahul, who had missed the previous ODI because of illness.
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan continued in the playing XI but found England's short-pitched bowling difficult to negotiate, reflecting the struggles experienced by several Indian batters against the hosts' aggressive pace attack.
One encouraging sign for India remained Shreyas Iyer, who continued his consistent run in the middle order. Iyer handled England's spin threat confidently, particularly against Adil Rashid, and once again contributed valuable runs under pressure.
