Indian Navy Responded to Distress Call from IRIS Dena

The Indian Navy has responded to a distress call from IRIS Dena, an Iranian war vessel that faced a crisis in the waters around Sri Lanka in the early hours of the week, which led to a multinational search operation in the region.

According to the report, the distress call was first received by the rescue coordination center in Colombo in the early hours of March 4, after which the Indian Navy was dispatched to assist the Sri Lankan Navy that was already leading the rescue mission in the region.

The crisis has come at a time when the region has been gripped by tensions arising from the war between Iran, the US, and Israel, but the crisis has also brought to light the rapid escalation of crises in the region that has seen many ships passing through the waters.

How the Distress Call Triggered a Rapid Response

The location was approximately 20 nautical miles to the west of Galle in Sri Lanka when the distress signal was broadcast after receiving information regarding a major explosion occurring onboard.

The location was within the Search and Rescue (SAR) zone assigned to Sri Lanka; however, other nearby forces, including India, have been quick to assist in the rescue operations.

The Indian Navy has deployed a long-range maritime patrol plane to assist in the rescue operations currently underway in the location. Another plane with air-droppable life rafts has been made ready in case any other persons are spotted in the water.

An Indian naval training vessel that was already in the location has been deployed to assist in the rescue operations to look for any other survivors in the water. A survey vessel has also been dispatched from Kochi to assist in the rescue operations.

The rescue operations have involved different forces and vessels from different countries due to the urgency required in handling such operations.

Why IRIS Dena Was in the Region

The Iranian war vessel had taken part in the recent multination naval assembly and exercises held by India in Visakhapatnam in early February.

The exercises involved warships from different nations with the aim of increasing maritime relations and naval diplomacy in the Indian Ocean.

According to defense experts, the Iranian war vessel was on its way westwards after the exercises when the incident occurred. The timing of the distress call has heightened fears that the Middle East conflict is spilling over into other waters.

According to reports from international media sources, the war vessel could have sustained catastrophic damage from what is believed to have been a torpedo attack while in international waters.

What Happens Next

The first priority remains the ongoing rescue and search operation for the crew that may still be missing.

Diplomatic action may also be taken, especially if more information is known regarding the events that occurred in the emergency situation. In the event that it is confirmed that the emergency situation is related to the conflict with Iran, there may also be concerns regarding the safety of all naval and sea vessels in the region.

In the case of India, the action is related to the standard humanitarian obligation that all vessels in the region should be helped regardless of their origin.

It has been mentioned that the cooperation with the authorities in Sri Lanka will continue until the rescue operation is complete.
