Iran Reportedly Set to Receive Chinese Shoulder-Launched Missile Systems
Iran is expected to receive 300 to 400 Chinese-made man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) within the coming weeks under a reported defence agreement valued between $60 million and $70 million, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The reported package includes QW-12 and FN-16 shoulder-launched missile systems, both designed to engage low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). If completed, the deal would strengthen Iran's short-range air defence capabilities at a time of heightened regional security concerns.
Deal Reportedly Worth Up to $70 Million
Sources indicated that the proposed agreement covers 300–400 missile systems, with the total value estimated at $60 million to $70 million.
The QW-12 and FN-16 are modern portable surface-to-air missile systems developed by China. They are intended for use by infantry units and are capable of targeting aircraft operating at low altitudes, making them valuable assets for battlefield air defence.
China Rejects the Report
Chinese authorities dismissed the reports, describing them as "groundless." Beijing has not confirmed any defence agreement involving the transfer of these missile systems to Iran.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, which had been mentioned in some reports regarding possible transfer routes, also denied any involvement in facilitating the delivery of military equipment.
The conflicting statements leave the reported transaction unverified, with no official confirmation from either the Chinese or Iranian governments.
Regional Security Implications
If the reported acquisition proceeds, it could enhance Iran's layered air defence network by providing additional protection against helicopters, drones, and low-flying aircraft.
The development comes amid continued tensions across the Middle East, where countries have increased investments in missile defence and air defence systems in response to evolving regional threats.
Military analysts note that portable missile systems such as the QW-12 and FN-16 are primarily designed for tactical battlefield defence rather than long-range strategic interception.
